A ceramic coating cures onto the clear coat and leaves the car with a harder, slicker surface than wax can give it. Dirt sits on top instead of keying into the paint, water pulls into tight beads and carries road film off with it, and a wash goes quicker because less is stuck on in the first place. It goes on after the paint is corrected and stripped clean, since anything trapped under a coating stays under it.
The car stays inside while the coating cures, and you leave knowing how to look after the first week: wash it gently, keep it out of automatic brushes, and skip harsh drying aids. A coating makes sense on a car you plan to keep or a new one you want to start protected. It does not make paint scratch proof, and nobody honest is going to tell you otherwise.
